England manager Thomas Tuchel expressed his "utmost respect" for Angel Postecoglou at a press conference, but also hinted that he understood Tottenham's decision to sack the Australian.

Shortly before the press conference, the news of Postecoglou's dismissal had just been reported. In response to media questions, Tuchel expressed his respect for the coach who had led Tottenham to win the Europa League, but he also admitted: "The coach must be responsible for the results."

Tuchel said: "I have the highest respect for him. He is a coach with personality. But we must take responsibility for the results. I empathize with every coach, especially the moment of being fired. I have experienced it myself. That feeling is very bad."

Although Postecoglou led Tottenham to defeat Manchester United and win the Europa League, ending the club's 17-year championship drought, his coaching performance in the Premier League was far from satisfactory. Tottenham lost 22 games in 38 league games and finished 17th, setting the worst record in the Premier League era, which ultimately made his position precarious.

Tuchel expressed sympathy for his colleague's experience, but also stressed: "The coach's responsibility has never been only about tactics and the locker room, but also the result itself."

Tuchel is currently leading England in preparation for this weekend's World Cup qualifier against Andorra, followed by a warm-up match against Senegal.
