After a tough defensive battle at Old Trafford, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim praised the team's resilience and unity under extreme pressure in a post-match interview.
Despite Manchester United having only 32% possession throughout the match, they secured a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United thanks to their tenacious defense. Amorim described it as a victory of willpower.
In the post-match press conference, Amorim specifically mentioned the team's defensive performance in the second half. At the end of the match, four players aged 21 and under remained on the field.
Facing the onslaught from their opponents, Amorim bluntly stated: "We are suffering as a united group. This season, we have had many games where we played better than our opponents but still lost, and today, although we struggled a lot in the second half, we managed to win."
Regarding the mere 30% possession, Amorim admitted it wasn't a sustainable solution, but he valued the mental fortitude behind the clean sheet even more. This was Manchester United's second clean sheet this season.
Amorim remarked, "We were under much more pressure today, but at times, the players gave their all. We used our bodies to block every cross in the penalty area."
Despite previous victories against strong opponents like Manchester City and Arsenal, Amorim believes this Boxing Day win is particularly significant. He saw the team displaying the most desperate fighting spirit amidst numerous difficulties.
In the second half, Manchester United were forced to switch to a six-man defense to survive. Amorim commented, "If we always have this spirit, we will win a lot of games. We need to understand this: sometimes even if we don't play beautifully, we can still win games with this kind of cohesion."
