Premier League club Manchester United issued a statement that former center forward Wyn Davies passed away recently at the age of 83.
Born in Caernarfon, Wales in 1942, Davis first started his career at Wrexham, where he was a quarryman. He then reached the peak of his career at Bolton and Newcastle United, scoring 74 goals and 53 goals respectively, and won the 1969 Fairs Cup with Newcastle United. Davis is also a member of the Welsh national team, playing 34 games for the country.
In September 1972, Davis joined Manchester United from Manchester City for a transfer fee of about £65,000. At that time, Manchester United was in a slump after a winless start, and his joining was highly anticipated.
During his one season at Manchester United, Davis had many highlights, including a crucial goal against Derby County, helping the team achieve its first league win in a long time.
Davis made 17 appearances for Manchester United, scoring four goals, before moving to Blackpool in the summer of 1973 to continue his career.
Although Davis played for Manchester United for a short time and during a turbulent period for the club, his fighting spirit and contribution during that difficult period are still remembered by fans. In British football, especially in the north, he has always been regarded as a strong and reliable center forward.
Manchester United expresses its deepest condolences on the passing of Davies and thanks him for the valuable mark he left on the club and on football.
