Former Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann announced his retirement on Wednesday, ending his 18-year professional career.
The 37-year-old Fährmann came through the Schalke 04 youth academy and made his Bundesliga debut for the first team on September 13, 2008. He played for Schalke for 13 seasons at different stages of his career, making a total of 289 appearances and winning one German Super Cup with the team.
Fährmann also had a brief stint at Eintracht Frankfurt, but only made 19 appearances in two years. Towards the end of his career, he was loaned out by Schalke to Norwich City and Bransport.
Since leaving Schalke in July 2025, Fährmann has been unemployed. When asked by Transfermarkt about the possibility of a return to the pitch, he immediately gave a clear answer: "That's it. My career is over. I've deliberately set aside time to patiently wait for some interesting or exciting opportunities to arise. However, I haven't received any offers that I'm really passionate about in recent months. I will not be wearing goalkeeper gloves again and returning to the professional arena."
Fährmann was once widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga, but his career was never marked by a call-up to the German national team. When discussing this, Fährmann expressed a subtle and complex attitude: "Even without a national team appearance, my morning coffee still smells delicious. But objectively speaking, given the level I've demonstrated over the years, I should have received a call-up, or at least made one appearance for the national team."
