Union Berlin officially announced on Thursday that it has renewed its contract with vice-captain Rani Khedira. As usual, the club did not disclose the length and specific details of the contract.

The 31-year-old Rani Khedira came from Stuttgart's youth training and made his first appearance in the Bundesliga for the first team on September 1, 2013. He then played for RB Leipzig and Augsburg, during which time he played in 129 Bundesliga games, scored 6 goals and provided 4 assists.

In July 2021, Khedira joined Union Berlin as a free agent. He mainly plays as a defensive midfielder for Union Berlin. So far, he has made 149 appearances, contributed 3 goals and 1 assist, and participated in the Champions League, Europa League and UEFA Cup with the team once each.

After completing the contract extension, Khedira said: "Looking back, I have spent the best moments of my career at Berlin United and I am very proud of it. But I also know that this journey is far from over."

He added: “I want to continue to feel that sense of belonging and the excitement I feel when I walk out of the tunnel and into the Alte Fürstendamm with this extraordinary team. That’s why I’m very happy that I can continue to stay at Union Berlin in the future.

Horst Herdt, head of professional football at Union Berlin, said: “Rani has been a key member of the team and the entire family since the first day he joined Union Berlin. With his personality, experience and playing style, the value he brings day in day out is extremely valuable to the club and the team - both on and off the pitch.”
