Marty Cifuentes: The team will face new challenges and we must be fully prepared

Leicester City manager Matti Cifuentes said it was crucial to start the new season right after their 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday. It was his first competitive match in charge and he was overwhelmed by the enthusiastic support from the Leicester City fans.

It's been a swift turnaround for Matí Cifuentes and his players, with Leicester City next heading to Yorkshire for a Carabao Cup clash against Huddersfield.

"First of all, we are very happy because winning a football match is never easy. Today's game showed the challenge of the first game of the new season and the players had very mixed emotions," said Marty Cifuentes.

“A match is played in two halves, but starting in the right way is crucial and today means a lot to everyone. The fans have been so supportive since I arrived here. It feels really special to start my first competitive match at home with a win.”

"I've been working hard to create this atmosphere and hope everyone understands that we'll need everyone's support throughout the season. Winning games is never easy, no matter the vision or the situation. Today's game was crucial and all the substitutes played an important role. Everyone's contribution is important. A home win always feels good, and creating momentum is also crucial."

"We must start the game with good confidence and know that whatever results we achieved today are in the past. We will face new challenges next and need to be fully prepared."

“We dominated in terms of ball possession, shots and chances created, and we had to be patient and wait for opportunities to arise. The coach stressed the need to improve our tactics in the final third at half-time, and we found a breakthrough early in the second half, ultimately winning the game to the cheers of the home fans.”

"Football is about achievement, not deservingness," continued Martí Cifuentes. "The number of shots isn't important, the goal is the goal. We created a lot of chances and put a lot of pressure on. In my opinion, the goalkeeper was probably the man of the match, but we needed to stay calm for the sake of team unity."

"We weren't able to create momentum in the first 15 minutes of the first half, which was disappointing. From a tactical point of view, there's definitely room for improvement. We need to increase the tempo of our passes and optimise our positioning in attack. Indeed, we discussed that week whether Sheffield Wednesday could play with a back four or five, and they ultimately opted for a back five. We need to increase the pace of possession, create more space and be able to adjust our formation more flexibly."

"We have to be clear about what we need to do because mentally it's not easy. We discussed this week that there could be a situation where the opponent is ahead and we need to be mentally tough enough to persevere."

"I thought the players showed resilience and determination in the second half. We kept trying and ultimately succeeded. The support from the fans was also fantastic, helping us create chances and keep going. Ultimately, it was a well-deserved win."
