According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, the future of Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum remains uncertain. He is reassessing his situation and considering missing the entire 2025/26 season.

Jayson Tatum, 27, has been recovering from a ruptured right Achilles tendon since undergoing surgery in May 2025. It was widely believed that his comeback was progressing faster than expected, and he might even return to the court as early as March of this year.

However, Haines offered another possibility on Wednesday evening: "Whether he can return this season is still unknown. I've been told there are several reasons that led him to this idea. However, the situation has completely changed now. Tatum had previously told me personally that he originally planned to return at some point this season."

Haines added, "He was close to returning, and I'd been hearing that his comeback was imminent. But sources within the league told me that things have changed."

Earlier, Tatum also discussed his concerns about returning to play on The Pivot Podcast. When asked if he would return to the Celtics this season, he admitted, "That's something I think about every day, mostly from a team perspective. They played over 50 regular season games while I was out, which helped them develop their own style, find chemistry and rhythm, and it worked very well."

"I can't help but wonder: How will this work? Or what will it be like to return from injury after playing fifty or sixty regular season games? Obviously, there will be some challenges."

“I’ve been thinking: Should I come back? Or should I wait? To be honest, I’ve been thinking about this question almost every day for the past two weeks or so.”

Despite Jayson Tatum's hesitation about returning to the court, Celtics head coach Joe Mazzula remains confident in him. On Thursday's episode of "Zolak & Bertrand" on 98.5 The Sports Hub, Mazzula stated definitively, "He's recovering naturally, without any setbacks."

“There are bound to be a lot of problems when you’re going through an injury and recovery process. What’s most admirable about Jason is his honesty and vulnerability. He’s very honest about his condition – both as a player and as an individual. I think we should reward him; it’s only natural.”

"As long as he returns, we will definitely become a stronger team. There is no doubt about that. He has absolutely no need to worry about any so-called negative impact, because he will only make us better on both ends of the court and add to what we have already achieved this season."
