According to ESPN's Shams Charania on Wednesday, Giannis Antetokounmpo rejected the Bucks' offer to end his season prematurely.
The Milwaukee Bucks officially announced the previous day that Giannis Antetokounmpo would be sidelined due to a left knee injury. Although no official timetable for his return has been given, it is widely predicted that Antetokounmpo will miss at least a week.
Charania further pointed out that the two sides had held multiple talks regarding Giannis's return in the past 24 hours. The Bucks, out of risk aversion, hoped Giannis would end his season early. However, Giannis made it clear to Bucks general manager Jon Horst and staff that he wanted to return to the court without aggravating his injury.
Giannis Antetokounmpo, 31, is a 2.11-meter tall, 110-kilogram forward who entered the NBA in 2013 as the 15th overall pick in the first round. He has played 12 seasons in the league, appearing in 895 games, averaging 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.2 blocks in 32.7 minutes per game, and has won numerous honors including seven All-NBA First Team selections, ten All-Star appearances, two regular season MVP awards, and one Defensive Player of the Year award.
Giannis Antetokounmpo also played 84 playoff games, averaging 27.0 points, 12.2 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.3 blocks in 36.2 minutes per game. His most glorious moment was undoubtedly leading the Bucks to the NBA championship in 2021 with a Finals MVP-caliber performance.
So far this season, Giannis Antetokounmpo has missed 32 of the 68 regular season games due to injury. Even so, he still delivered a well-rounded stat line of 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game in his limited playing time.
The Bucks currently sit 11th in the Eastern Conference with a 28-40 record, making their playoff hopes precarious. The rejection of their season-ending injury proposal is seen by many as a sign of a further deterioration in relations between the two sides.
