Former NBA point guard Patrick Beverley was arrested in Texas on felony assault charges, TMZ exclusively reported on Friday. He faces charges of assaulting a family member or cohabitant that obstructs breathing or blood flow, a third-degree felony.
The report further noted that Beverley was released and returned home later that day after posting $40,000 bail. Beverley also posted on social media at 5:15 p.m. local time: "Please don't believe rumors online. Hope everything is alright, love you all."
Beverley's lawyer, Leticia Quinones-Hollins, stated in a press release: "Patrick Beverley has no prior criminal record. He is deeply concerned for his sister—a minor. Given this, it is understandable that he would be worried when he unexpectedly found her alone at home with an 18-year-old man late at night; any brother would feel the same way. However, we do not believe that what followed was as described in the media. We look forward to clarifying the facts in court."
The 37-year-old Beverley was the 42nd overall pick in the second round of the 2009 NBA draft. During his career, he played for the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, Philadelphia 76ers, and Milwaukee Bucks. He played 12 seasons in the NBA, appearing in 666 games, averaging 8.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. He was also selected to the 2017 NBA All-Defensive Team.
Beverley also played 71 playoff games, averaging 8.2 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.
However, Beverley has been unemployed for nine months. He parted ways with Hapoel Tel Aviv in February after six months with the club.
