Premier League powerhouse Tottenham Hotspur have officially announced the dismissal of Thomas Frank as first-team manager.
The 52-year-old Danish manager's tenure in North London lasted only eight months before ending abruptly due to a collapse in form. The immediate trigger for Frank's dismissal was Tottenham's humiliating 1-2 home defeat to Newcastle United on Tuesday night.
This was not only Tottenham's 11th defeat in the Premier League this season, but it also caused the traditional powerhouse to slip to 16th place in the standings, just 5 points above the relegation zone, sounding the alarm for survival.
On the night of the match, the atmosphere at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium plummeted to freezing point. Angry fans not only chanted "You'll be sacked tomorrow," but also sang the name of former manager Mauricio Pochettino in protest from the stands.
Despite Frank's initial success in leading the team from the Champions League group stage to the round of 16 after taking over in June last year, disastrous performances in domestic competitions have caused the club's board to lose patience. Data shows that Tottenham are currently experiencing their longest league winless streak since October 2008, with eight games unbeaten and only two wins in their last 17 league matches.
Furthermore, the loss of control in the locker room was also a major reason for Frank's dismissal. Captain Cristian Romero even publicly criticized the club's management on social media after the transfer window closed, an act that completely exposed the rifts within the team.
To avoid relegation, the club has decided to change managers. Tottenham's official statement said: "Although Thomas has given his all, given the current results, changes are necessary."
It is understood that Tottenham Hotspur have not yet identified a permanent successor and are very likely to appoint an interim manager to help them stay away from the relegation zone for the remainder of the season.
