Dutch midfielder Marco van Ginkel officially announced on Thursday that he will retire from professional football, effective immediately. He left Boavista in July 2025 and has been unemployed since.
The statement read: "After 16 years in the football world, I am retiring from my professional career. It has been a rollercoaster ride, from which I have gained invaluable experience and unforgettable memories. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way. I am proud of the past and ready to embrace a new chapter."
The 33-year-old Van Ginkel came through the Vitesse youth academy and made his professional debut for the first team in the Eredivisie on April 9, 2010. He subsequently played for several teams, including Chelsea, AC Milan, Stoke City, PSV Eindhoven, and Boavista, but was unable to fully realize his potential due to injuries.
To date, Van Ginkel has made 338 club appearances, scoring 69 goals and providing 41 assists. Despite being plagued by injuries, he still won one Europa League title, two Eredivisie titles, one Dutch Cup title, and two Dutch Super Cup titles with his club.
At the national team level, Van Ginkel has only made eight appearances for the Netherlands since 2012. During this period, he has neither scored a goal nor provided an assist.
