Bundesliga newcomers Hamburg officially announced on Friday that they have extended Klaus Costa's contract, which was originally set to expire in 2026, effective immediately. Hamburg has not yet disclosed the length of the extension or other specific details.
The 41-year-old Costa has been with Hamburg since 2019 and was promoted from scout to sporting director in March 2023. He has performed exceptionally well in building the team's squad and has made significant contributions to Hamburg's return to the Bundesliga.
Regarding the decision to renew Costa's contract, Hamburger SV board member Stefan Kunz explained: "Klaus played a crucial role in our return to the Bundesliga. I was clear from the beginning that we wanted to renew his contract."
“Over the past year and a half, Klaus has completely won me over with his expertise and dedication. He not only has excellent market insight and extensive industry connections, but also works closely with the team every day, demonstrating a diligent attitude and team spirit. Klaus made a significant contribution to our return to the Bundesliga and subsequently completed the necessary squad rebuilding in a short period of time. Therefore, I decided early on that we wanted to extend his contract.”
Costa stated after the contract extension: “It has always been an honor for me to continue working in this position and representing such a great club as Hamburg. I deeply appreciate Stefan's trust in me and have benefited greatly from his extensive experience. I highly value our aligned working relationship – whether during challenging transfer windows or in other areas of work, we have always maintained frank, occasionally argumentative but constructive communication.”
"Despite the competitive challenges we faced in the past few years, we have successfully built strong cohesion within the club. The strong support from all departments of the club, the close cooperation with the coaching staff, and the high level of trust from the board of directors and the supervisory board all played a key role in ultimately propelling us back to the Bundesliga."
Costa concluded, "I am highly motivated and will continue along the path we have chosen. I will work with the club's board of directors, coaching staff, players, and the entire management to help Hamburg stay in the Bundesliga."
Hamburg has performed admirably this season, ranking 13th in the Bundesliga after 10 rounds with 2 wins, 3 draws and 5 losses, accumulating 9 points.
