The Ghana Football Federation (GFA) announced on Monday that Otto Addo has been immediately dismissed from his position as head coach of the national team.
The 50-year-old Addo is one of Ghanaian football legends. During his playing career, he represented the national team in the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2006 World Cup. He also helped Borussia Dortmund win the Bundesliga title and helped Hamburg lift the Intertoto Cup.
After retiring in 2008, Addo took his first coaching role at Hamburg's U19 team. He subsequently held various positions as a youth coach, assistant coach, and scout at Hamburg, Ghana, Nordsjælland, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Borussia Dortmund, and was twice appointed as the head coach of the Black Stars team.
According to Transfermarkt, Addo has led Ghana to a record of 13 wins, 8 draws, and 13 losses so far. However, Ghana had gone four months without a win before Addo was dismissed, and even suffered consecutive defeats in friendlies against Japan, South Korea, Austria, and Germany.
The Ghana Football Federation has not yet finalized Addo's successor, only stating that it will announce the news at the appropriate time. For the incoming coach, his primary task is preparing for the 2026 World Cup.
This marks Ghana's fifth appearance in the World Cup finals. According to the schedule, they will play their first match in Toronto on June 17th, facing Panama, England, and Croatia, all in Group L.
