With the 2026 North American World Cup fast approaching, the Ghanaian national men's football team is undergoing a major change at a crucial moment in its preparations.

The Ghana Football Federation (GFA) released an official statement on Tuesday announcing the termination of the contract with head coach Otto Addo, effective immediately. This comes just 72 days before the start of the World Cup.

The immediate trigger for this dismissal decision was Ghana's recent dismal performance in warm-up matches. In preparation for the upcoming North American World Cup, Ghana had been training in Europe. However, the team first suffered a humiliating 1-5 defeat to Austria last Friday, followed by a 1-2 loss to Germany in Stuttgart.

The Ghana Football Federation (GFA) confirmed the news briefly and directly in an official statement: "The Ghana Football Federation (GFA) has parted ways with Otto Addo, the head coach of the senior men's national team, effective immediately."

Former Borussia Dortmund player Otto Addo officially took over as manager in March 2024. However, during his tenure, the team's performance has fallen short of expectations. Despite boasting talented Premier League stars such as Antoine Semenyo and Mohamed Kudus, Addo failed to lead the Ghanaian national team to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

In the 22 matches he led the team, Ghana only managed 8 wins and 9 losses, a winning percentage of less than 40%. This coaching performance clearly failed to satisfy the management and fans.

This marks Ghana's fifth appearance in the World Cup finals. In the upcoming 2026 World Cup, they have been drawn into the highly competitive Group L, alongside European powerhouses England and Croatia, as well as Panama from the Americas.
