USA Basketball officially announced on Tuesday that Erik Spoelstra will replace Steve Kerr as head coach. The two sides signed a three-year contract that is valid until 2028.

As the Miami Heat's meritorious head coach, the 54-year-old Spoelstra has held the position for 17 seasons. He has led the Heat to a record of 787 wins and 572 losses since 2008 and won two NBA championships in 2013 and 2021.

Spoelstra's primary focus now is leading the USA Basketball team to the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Spoelstra said emotionally, "I am deeply honored to be named head coach of the USA Basketball team. Representing my country and leading world-class players in major tournaments is one of the highest honors in sports. I look forward to continuing the tradition of excellence and teamwork that USA Basketball is so proud of."

For the US men's basketball team, Spoelstra has extensive experience coaching the national team. He served as the chief assistant coach under Steve Kerr and was the behind-the-scenes hero in the US men's basketball team's victory in the last Olympic gold medal.

In the announcement, Grant Hill, the general manager of the US Men's Basketball team who oversaw the coaching search, said: "I have known Erik Spoelstra for nearly two decades and have gotten to know him better during our time together at USA Basketball. Spoelstra is not only an outstanding coach, but also an excellent colleague, friend and father. For this reason, he is the perfect person to continue USA Basketball's coaching tradition and lead the team into 2028."
