The Athletic reported on Saturday, citing news from the Clackamas County District Court in Oregon, that former Portland Trail Blazers shooting guard Ben McLemore is found guilty of multiple charges of rapes and sexual assaults against a 21-year-old woman at a party held at a lakehouse in 2021 and will be sentenced.
According to the report, McLemore was arrested and detained by Oregon police on April 10 and summoned to the Clackamas County District Court for trial.
After a 16-day trial, the case ended on Thursday (July 3rd) local time. In the end, the judge ruled that McLemore was guilty of one first-degree rape, one first-degree unlawful sexual assault and one second-degree sexual abuse, and will sentence him at the sentencing hearing on July 9.
Regarding McLemore's case, John Wentworth, the presiding District Attorney in charge of the case, said: "We realize that some celebrities or people with prominent status can escape prosecution, but in Clackamas County, this is impossible. This case shows that no matter what the community status of the criminal is, anyone who has criminal behavior will be prosecuted by my office."
According to the Oregon Criminal Code, McLemore is likely to be sentenced to at least 8 years in prison.
Reporters tried to contact McLemore's defense team but they insisted on not responding.
The incident occurred on October 3, 2021. At that time, McLemore attended a party of his then-teammate Robert Covington.
At the party, McLemore assaulted a 21-year-old female college student who was drunk and unconscious on the sofa.
Although McLemore insisted that the contact was consensual, the jury found him guilty of three of the four charges, rejecting his claim that the woman had contacted him while he was asleep. Photos from the scene also showed that the woman had vomited and fell into a coma, which was inconsistent with McLemore's statement.
The prosecutor said the woman never asked for compensation and filed the lawsuit only because "you can't treat others like this", while the defense attorney said the encounter was "two drunk people having sex" and claimed that Covington saw that the woman took the initiative to contact, but Covington himself did not testify in court.
