Former UCLA star David Greenwood dies at 68

Former UCLA basketball star and NBA veteran David Greenwood recently passed away due to cancer at the age of 68.

The news was announced by UCLA on June 12. According to his family, Greenwood died in Riverside, California on June 9. Greenwood was one of the last players recruited by UCLA legendary coach John Wooden during his tenure.

Greenwood shone at Verbum Dei High School in Los Angeles in high school, and then joined UCLA in 1975. During his four years in college, he played 118 games for the team, averaging 14.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, helping UCLA win four league championships and leading the team to the NCAA Final Four in 1976.

Greenwood was selected to the All-American First Team for two consecutive years. He is the first UCLA player to achieve this achievement since Bill Walton. To this day, he still ranks fourth on the school's all-time rebounding list.

In the 1979 NBA draft, Greenwood was selected by the Chicago Bulls with the second pick. Before Michael Jordan joined, he was one of the core players of the Chicago Bulls with Reggie Theus and Orlando Woolridge.

In 1985, Greenwood was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Hall of Fame star George Gervin. He played for four teams in his career: the Chicago Bulls, San Antonio, Denver Nuggets and Detroit Pistons. In 1990, he won the NBA championship as a substitute player with the Detroit Pistons defeating the Portland Trail Blazers.

After retiring, Greenwood returned to coach at his alma mater, Verbum Dei, and led the team to two state championships in 1998 and 1999. He is also a member of the Pac-12 Hall of Fame and the National College Basketball Hall of Fame. In 2023, he also attended UCLA's Pac-12 farewell game at Pauley Pavilion.
