Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire said on Wednesday that he is optimistic about his contract renewal prospects.
The 33-year-old Maguire came through the Sheffield United youth academy and made his professional debut for the first team in the Championship on April 12, 2011. He then played for Hull City, Wigan Athletic, and Leicester City before joining Manchester United in July 2019 for a record £80 million.
To date, Maguire has made 266 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 17 goals and providing 9 assists, winning one FA Cup and one League Cup with the team. He has also been an indispensable starter since Michael Carrick took over as manager in January this year, playing a key role in Manchester United's push for a top-three finish in the Premier League.
Despite his current contract expiring in June, Maguire is confident of renewing his deal with Manchester United. In an interview with The Guardian, he stated clearly: "Negotiations have taken place between the two sides. I believe we will eventually reach an agreement that balances the interests of both the club and myself."
"As for the specific details of the agreement, I believe everyone will know in the coming weeks. I think the issue will be resolved soon, regardless of whether the outcome is staying or leaving."
“I love this club, but a contract extension must be in my best interest as well as in the club’s best interest. I don’t want to stay based on emotions alone. I want to stay because I want to stay, and the club wants me to continue leading the team forward and believes I can play a key role in it. If that’s the case, I believe we will sit down and reach some kind of agreement.”
