Former Arsenal youth player Billy Vega has tragically passed away

Premier League club Arsenal issued an official statement expressing deep condolences for the unfortunate death of Chichester City striker and former youth player Billy Vigar.

Vega, who died at the age of 21 after suffering a severe brain injury, joined Arsenal's academy at the age of 14 after being scouted by his hometown club, Hove Rivervale FC. In his first season at Hale End, he demonstrated his exceptional forward talent, scoring 17 goals.

In 2020, Vega was awarded a scholarship due to his outstanding performance and entered the full-time youth training system along with Charles Sago, Remy Mitchell, Omari Hutchinson, Charlie Patino and Brooke Norton-Cuffey of the same period.

Although his first trainee season was hampered by a serious hamstring injury, Vega quickly returned the following year, scoring four goals in 18 U18 games and signing a professional contract with Arsenal at the end of the 2021-22 season.

Since then, Vega has represented the team in the Premier League 2 (PL2) and the English Football League Championship (EFL Trophy), not only showing his value in multiple positions on the front line, but even playing in the defense, fully demonstrating his dedication and versatility.

To gain experience, Vega went on loan to Derby County and Eastbourne City before returning to the south coast to join Hastings United at the end of the 2023-24 season. He then officially moved to Chichester City last month.

Arsenal said in a tribute that Vega was known not only for his talent but also for his love of football and his pride in representing Arsenal. He once said the day he was discovered by a scout was the most important day of his life. His diligence, perseverance, and kindness also made him well-liked by his teammates and coaching staff.
