The Toronto Raptors announced Monday that they have renewed the contract of general manager Bobby Webster and confirmed they will not appoint a new president of basketball operations.
The Raptors' president of basketball operations position has been vacant since Masai Ujiri left in June of this year. This arrangement means that Webster will be fully in charge of team operations. Keith Pelley, CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, the Raptors' parent company, explained: "We conducted a thorough search process this summer and met with multiple external candidates. This process played a key role in our decision because it allowed us to confirm that the right person was already on the team. After weighing many factors, including roster construction, team culture, and the competitive landscape, we believe that officially handing the team over to Bobby and giving him the time and support to implement the plan is the most reasonable option."
"After spending time with Bobby in Las Vegas this summer, I was impressed by his leadership, his strong relationships with players and staff, and his reputation among his peers around the league. More importantly, his long-term vision for the Raptors is compelling. Now with him at the helm, we are all looking forward to what's ahead."
Webster, 40, worked at the NBA's New York headquarters for seven years, primarily overseeing labor and personnel affairs. He joined the Raptors in 2013 as vice president of basketball operations and strategy, becoming one of the first employees of then-president and general manager Masai Ujiri.
Webster was promoted from assistant general manager to general manager in June 2017. During his tenure, he was primarily responsible for roster development, organizational structure, and daily basketball operations. On June 13, 2019, he led the Raptors to their first NBA championship.
"I'm deeply grateful to Keith, the board and ownership for the opportunity to continue doing what I love and serving this organization, this city and this country that has become my home," Webster said. "My passion for basketball, thoughtful and empowering leadership, and a fierce competitive spirit are at the core of who I am as a leader. That's what you see in me every day."
He concluded: "This is a new chapter in Raptors basketball, but one thing remains unchanged: our passion for winning and our goal of bringing another championship back to Toronto."
