On August 6, ESPN reported that the San Antonio Spurs continued to strengthen their roster depth by re-signing 6-foot-7, 230-pound forward Riley Minix . This one-year, two-way contract will allow him to continue to play both the G League and the NBA in the new season.
The 24- year-old Minix was signed by the Spurs last year after going undrafted. He has since excelled with the Austin Spurs of the G League. In his few appearances, he averaged 12.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game, showcasing his impressive defensive and defensive abilities.
Although his playing opportunities at the NBA level were limited, Minix played once for the Spurs on November 6 , 2024 , playing briefly for 7 minutes, grabbing two rebounds, but his only long-range shot missed.
Under current NBA rules, players on two-way contracts can play a maximum of 50 games for their home team during the regular season . Minix is expected to continue to primarily feature on the Austin Spurs roster, but along with Davey Jones , he is expected to receive more roster recalls to San Antonio as the season progresses.
This contract extension demonstrates the Spurs management's continued strategic focus on developing promising players and strengthening the roster. Finding value in development may be a key strategy for this young team as it rebuilds.
