According to ESPN's Shams Charania on Tuesday, Kings interim head coach Doug Christie is about to transfer. His agent, Andy Miller of Klutch Sports, is finalizing the contract details with the Kings this week, and the two sides are close to reaching a multi-year agreement.
Doug Christie, 54, played for the Sacramento Kings for five seasons as a player, during which he was selected to the NBA All-Defensive First Team once and the All-Defensive Second Team three times. He has served as an assistant coach for the Kings since the 2021/22 season, assisting three head coaches, Luke Walton, Alvin Gentry and Mike Brown.
In December 2024, Christie took over as head coach after the Kings fired Brown. Despite frequent changes in the team's management, injuries to the lineup, and the loss of key players, he still led the Kings to a record of 27 wins and 24 losses. During this period, the Kings' offensive efficiency jumped to ninth in the league, and their record in key moments was 13 wins and 10 losses, which was a significant improvement over Brown's coaching period.
However, the Kings won only 7 of the 20 regular season games at the end of the season and lost to the Mavericks 104-120 in the play-in round. Despite this, the club still trusts Christie and gives him further coaching opportunities by renewing his contract. Christie is expected to reorganize the coaching team in the offseason and establish his own coaching system.
