Mainz striker Jonathan Bukater: We will not stop fighting after being tied 2-2 by Wolfsburg

The 30th round of the 2024/25 Bundesliga saw another fierce battle. Mainz, who were at home, fell behind by one goal, but lost the ball again in the last stage of the second half, and were tied by Wolfsburg 2-2. Mainz striker Jonathan Bukater said that although the draw was disappointing for the team, he and the team would not stop fighting and would not relax.

Three minutes into the game, Kevin Padres received a pass from his teammate outside the penalty area and made a diagonal pass. Maximilian Arnold received the ball and scored with a long shot, helping Wolfsburg get a dream start with a 1-0 lead.

In the 37th minute, Nelson Wepper made a straight pass from the penalty area, and Lee Jae-sung took a few steps to meet the ball and then volleyed it into the goal, helping Mainz to tie the score at 1-1. In the 40th minute, Mainz got a corner kick opportunity, and Dominik Kerr faced the defense and shot the ball into the goal, helping Mainz to overtake 2-1.

In the 89th minute of the second half, Maximilian Arnold assisted Dennis Vavro to score, tying the score for Wolfsburg 2-2. In the end, Mainz was tied 2-2 at home by Wolfsburg. After only 3 draws and 2 losses in the past 5 rounds, Mainz currently ranks 6th in the standings with 47 points.

24-year-old Jonathan Bukater said in an interview, "This result is very painful. Our start was not good and our performance was not perfect, but we fought back and pulled the game back. We then successfully overtook and had a good chance to make the score 3-1, but in the end we failed to lock in the victory and let the opponent equalize the score through a set-piece. It was very disappointing."

"But one thing is clear, although the result of this game is disappointing, we will never relax and stop fighting. For the fans, we really want to get three points at home."

Mainz midfielder Nadim Amiri said, "We may have lacked a little luck and lacked calmness in defense. From the overall performance, we may even win the game 6-1. We played very well, so this draw feels like a loss. I am really sad, but I believe that as long as we continue to perform and work hard like this, we will achieve our goal."

"We were involved in every single challenge, we believed in ourselves and created a lot of chances, but to not win the game, I'm speechless."
