The Timberwolves are in urgent need of strengthening the point guard position and consider Bones Hyland as the first choice

According to TA reporter Jon Krawczynski on Thursday, the Minnesota Timberwolves regard Bones Hyland as one of their top targets to strengthen their point guard roster.

With Mike Conley entering the final year of his contract, Robert Dillingham's limited playing time last season, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker being traded to the Atlanta Hawks, the Timberwolves are in urgent need of reinforcement at the point guard position. They have examined several candidates, including Malcolm Brogdon, Cameron Payne, and Landry Shamet, but Hyland is considered the most likely candidate.

The 24-year-old American guard, standing 1.91 meters tall and weighing 75 kilograms, was selected by the Denver Nuggets with the 26th pick in the first round of the 2021 draft. He played for the Denver Nuggets for about two years before being sent to the Los Angeles Clippers in a major four-team trade.

However, Hyland's stay with the Clippers didn't last long. In February 2025, he and Terrance Mann were traded to the Atlanta Hawks. He was waived the next day and signed a two-way contract with the Timberwolves. To date, Hyland has appeared in just four games for the Timberwolves, averaging 1.3 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 39.8% from the field and 39.0% from three-point range.

Jon Krawczynski pointed out that the addition of Hyland would bring multiple benefits to the Timberwolves. In addition to filling the Timberwolves' lack of depth at the point guard position, Hyland would not take up too much salary nor affect Dillingham's development trajectory.

After signing Hyland, the Timberwolves will have 14 players on the roster (excluding two-way contracts). Krawczynski believes that the remaining vacancy can be used for a potential future trade, allowing the team to maintain a high degree of salary and roster flexibility.
