Two Chelsea fans were hospitalized after being stabbed by a group of angry Napoli fans, Sky Sports Italia reported on Wednesday, citing police sources.
According to the report, Naples Police responded quickly to the scene after receiving report and took statements from passersby.
At the time of the incident, seven to eight Chelsea fans from England were watching the Champions League match between Chelsea and Napoli at a bar near Naples.
Although the fans were not wearing any Chelsea-related jerseys or merchandise, they were suddenly attacked by a group of approximately 20 to 30 assailants.
The assailants, believed to be radical Napoli fans, immediately asked the Chelsea fans where they were from and then angrily pulled out screwdrivers and stabbed them.
The victims fled in self-defense, but unfortunately, two Chelsea fans were injured, one of whom suffered a stab wound to the lower leg.
A police spokesperson said that both injured fans have been taken to a local hospital for treatment, and fortunately, neither is in life-threatening condition.
Following the incident, police contacted the British Embassy in Italy and, with the embassy's assistance, contacted Chelsea and the Metropolitan Police.
Police from both countries will conduct a joint investigation hoping to apprehend the perpetrators as soon as possible.
Naples Police also urged all Chelsea fans still in Italy to avoid being alone and to be as vigilant as possible regarding their safety. Police will also increase manpower to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
The Premier League giants and reigning Club World Cup champions later confirmed the incident on their official website, urging fans to strictly follow police safety instructions.
