The NBA officially announced today that Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday has been named the NBA Social Justice Champion for the 2024-25 season and will receive the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Trophy symbolizing this honor.
In addition, the NBA will donate $100,000 to the Jrue and Lauren Holiday Social Impact Fund (JLH Fund), co-founded by Holiday and his wife Lauren, to support their continued efforts to promote social equality and economic justice.
Holiday was selected from five finalists for her outstanding contributions to community service, social justice advocacy and empowerment of marginalized groups. Since its inception, the JLH Fund founded by Holiday has awarded more than $5.3 million in grants and provided more than 400 hours of professional coaching and support to nearly 200 small businesses across the United States.
The fund originated from Holiday's initiative to donate his entire season's salary in 2020 to fight against systemic racial discrimination and economic injustice. In recent years, Holiday has also actively participated in the policy promotion work of the NBA National Basketball Social Justice Alliance, and cooperated with Boston Celtics teammate Jaylen Brown to launch the "Creator Incubator" program in Boston to empower local entrepreneurs from disadvantaged groups.
NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Mark Tatum said of Holiday's contribution: "Since entering the league, Zhu has always put helping others first, both on and off the court. His and Lauren's charity actions show true selflessness and create more opportunities for young people who may be overlooked."
Holiday's award also continues the NBA's tradition of combining sports with social responsibility. He has previously won the NBA Sports Ethics Award twice and is a widely respected role model inside and outside the league.
