Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier were arrested by the FBI on suspicion of engaging in illegal sports betting, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Thursday.

The case involves the use of confidential NBA information to manipulate game results, involving tens of millions of dollars. According to the indictment, Rozier participated in an illegal gambling scheme since 2023, providing gamblers with non-public player appearance and injury information.

At least seven NBA games were used for betting, including those between the Charlotte Hornets, Orlando Magic, Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Lakers and Toronto Raptors. Prosecutors allege that players deliberately left the game or feigned injuries in three of those games to influence the odds.

Rozier left the game early in the first quarter of a game against the New Orleans Pelicans in March 2023. His childhood friend then sold the information to a gambler for $100,000, and the related bets won hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Although Billups was not directly named in the Rozier case, the description of a co-conspirator mentioned in the indictment closely matches his. He allegedly tipped off gamblers that several key Trail Blazers players would miss their March 2023 game against the Chicago Bulls, causing market volatility. Prosecutors charged him and Rozier with wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy, both of which carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

The two have been suspended by the NBA. The league said in a statement: "We take these allegations extremely seriously. The integrity of the game is the NBA's primary value."

The investigation is still ongoing. Federal prosecutors emphasized that this incident not only shakes the public's trust in the integrity of the NBA, but also may become one of the largest illegal betting cases in the history of American professional sports.
