The Golden State Warriors lost 100-104 to the Houston Rockets, but the bigger loss came from the injury of their star player, Stephen Curry.
The team confirmed that Curry will be sidelined for at least a week due to a right quadriceps contusion and muscle strain, and will undergo further evaluation next week. This means he is expected to miss at least three games, and his return may be delayed.
Curry was injured during a defensive possession late in the game. With 3 minutes and 24 seconds remaining, he collided violently with Rockets' rising star Armen Thompson under the basket and fell to the ground. Curry visibly showed signs of pain and left the court to return to the locker room with 35 seconds left in the game.
The Warriors stated that Curry underwent an MRI after the game. According to the team's standard medical procedures, players must complete a series of progressively intensive recovery steps before returning to play. Therefore, even if the follow-up examination a week later shows good results, his actual return may still take longer.
After the game, head coach Steve Kerr spoke about Curry's condition, saying, "To be honest, when I heard it was a quadriceps injury, I was a little relieved, better than an ankle or knee injury. Hopefully, he can recover quickly, but right now we have to figure out how to get through the game."
Curry's absence has had a significant impact on the Warriors. He scored 14 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, and dished out 5 assists in this game, but also committed 7 turnovers. Kerr admitted that the team's rotation, offensive organization, and core tactics will all require major adjustments due to Curry's temporary absence.
Besides Curry, the Warriors are also facing other injury problems. Guard Gary Payton II sprained his left ankle in the same game, further troubling the team's backcourt depth.
