After a 52-year wait, the Democratic Republic of Congo faces its fateful battle.

For fans in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the long wait for the World Cup, which has lasted 52 years, is expected to come to an end on Tuesday.

The team is about to face Jamaica in the continental play-off final, a do-or-die match that will determine not only their qualification for the 2026 USA-Mexico World Cup, but also, if they win, they will become the 10th African team to participate in this tournament.

The story dates back to 1974, when the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) made its first and only appearance at the West German World Cup. However, that journey turned into a disaster, with the team suffering a 0-2 defeat to Scotland and a humiliating 0-9 loss to Yugoslavia. In the 0-3 loss to Brazil, right-back Iruna inexplicably rushed out of the wall and kicked the ball wide during a free kick.

This somewhat absurd move not only earned Iruna a yellow card but also severely damaged the reputation of African football. Years later, reports surfaced that behind this unusual behavior and poor performance lay dark secrets such as unpaid wages and threats of violence.

Today, a new generation of national team players is determined to dispel the shadow that has shrouded the country for 52 years. Burnley defender Tuanzebe stated that this was the most important match of his career.

Former national team captain and current U20 national team assistant coach Gabriel Sakuyani has defined it as the greatest match in the national team's history. He said, "Our goal is not just to make up the numbers or participate in this feast. We are eager to show real competitiveness and create a new history for ourselves."
