76ers shooting guard Grimes is considering a one-year contract after the offer fell short of expectations.

Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Gina Mizer confirmed Thursday that the Philadelphia 76ers and restricted free agent Quentin Grimes are still at a stalemate in contract extension negotiations. The two sides have serious disagreements over annual salary, and a one-year contract is currently seen as the most likely solution.

Grimes has confirmed he will miss media day this Friday and will not travel with the team for the two preseason games in Abu Dhabi next week. His agent, David Bowman, confirmed to Gina Mizell that the 76ers' official offer of $39 million over four years fell far short of the player's team's expectations. Bowman maintains that Grimes deserves a contract between $20 million and $25 million per year.

Grimes, 25, plays shooting guard and was selected with the 25th pick in the first round of the NBA Draft in July 2021. He previously played for the New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, and Dallas Mavericks before being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in February 2025.

According to ESPN, Grimes has played in 243 regular-season games so far in his career, averaging 10.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game, shooting 44.4% from the field and 37.5% from three-point range. Last season, after being traded to the 76ers, he played in 28 games, averaging 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game, shooting 46.9% from the field and 37.3% from three-point range.

Despite Grimes' impressive performance last season, the 76ers worried his breakout season might be short-lived. With a roster already featuring guards like Tyrese Maxey, Jared McCain, and V.J. Edgecomb, management was skeptical about Grimes' ability to maintain his high level of performance in a competitive environment.

Gina Mizell has learned that the current focus of negotiations has shifted to a one-year contract. Grimes is leaning toward a one-year, $8.71 million qualifying offer, which includes a no-trade option. The 76ers, however, have offered a one-year contract slightly higher than the qualifying offer, but with the condition that the player waive his no-trade option. Michael Scotto speculates that the offer range is between $14 million and $19 million.

Regardless of the option chosen, Grimes will become a free agent after the 2025/26 season.
