Marseille cruised to a 3-0 victory over Rennes in the Round of 16s of the 2025/26 Coupe de France at the Stade Vélodrome on Tuesday.

In the first half, Gouiri opened the scoring with a close-range shot. In the second half, Greenwood volleyed and scored, and Aubameyang tapped the ball into the empty net. Ultimately, Marseille secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Rennes.

First Half

In the 2nd minute, Marseille launched a deadly quick counter-attack. Quentin Merlin hesitated to clear the ball in his own penalty area, allowing Timothy Weah to intercept and passes horizontally from the right side of the box. Amine Gouiri quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass strucked the ball into the bottom corner of the net from a very close distance in the box with his right-foot, giving Marseille an early 1-0 lead! This is the Algeria international striker's sixth goal in his last seven matches!

Fourteen minutes later, Marseille launched a quick counter-attack. Abdelhamid Aït Boudlal misjudged the clearance in his own penalty area, allowing Gouiri to intercept the ball and volleyed with his right foot from a difficult angle on the left side of the box, but his shot was saved by Brice Samba.

In the 22nd minute, Glen Kamara was maliciously tackled from behind and was injured by Ethan Nwaneri while dribbling down the left flank, but the latter only received a yellow card, this is a decision that sparked considerable controversy!

In the first minute of stoppage time, Igor Paixão was tackled and brought down in the penalty area by Aït Boudlal, but the referees refused to award Marseille a penalty, this is another decision that caused considerable controversy!

One minute later, Sebastian Szymanski crossed pass from the left side of the box. His pass was initially parried and cleared off not far away by Jeffrey De Lange. Mousa Al-Tamari quickly followed up and then attempted with a header in the box, however his effort was saved by De Lange.

At halftime, Marseille temporarily enter the break leading Rennes by 1-0.

Second Half

Both teams switched sides as the match continued. In the 46th minute, Gouiri made a straight pass from the attacking third. Mason Greenwood quickly followed up, got the ball and took a few steps before volleying the ball with into the bottom left corner of the net from the center of the box with his right foot, extending Marseille's lead to 2-0! This is the former Manchester United youth academy graduate's 22nd goal in all competitions this season!

Twenty minutes later, Greenwood passes horizontally from the right side of the box. Gouiri quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, volleyed with his right foot from the center of the box, but his shot flew high out of the pitch. Marseille missed a golden opportunity to score again!

In the 82nd minute, Greenwood deliberately passes horizontally in front the of the outrushing Samba. Pierre-Emile Aubameyang quickly followed up, got the ball and took a few steps before easily slotting the ball into the bottom left corner of the empty net from the center of the box with his right foot, sealing a 3-0 victory for Marseille!

Five minutes later, Szymanski played a through ball from near the midfield center circle. After beating the offside trap, Al-Tamari quickly followed up, got the ball and dribbled into the left side of the box before volleying with his right footed shot from a difficult angle past the outrushing De Lange. His shot was parried by the latter and then blocked by Weah.

When the final whistle is blown, Marseille easily defeated Rennes by 3-0.
