Memphis Grizzlies announce Ja Morant has sprained his left ankle and his return date will depend on weekly monitoring of his rehabilitation progress..

The Memphis Grizzlies announced on their official website on Tuesday that All-Star point guard Ja Morant has sprained his left ankle and his return date will depend on weekly monitoring of his rehabilitation progress.

According to the Grizzlies' official statement, Morant suffered the injury during a training session on Sunday. Not only will he miss the pre-season opener against the Detroit Pistons, but he may also miss the early regular season matches.

Since Morant has opted for traditional treatment, his return date will depend on his weekly rehabilitation progress.

The news of Morant's injury is another blow to the already injury-ridden Memphis Grizzlies.

Starting center Zach Edey and reserve power forward Brandon Clarke both remain sidelined following offseason ankle and knee surgeries, respectively.

Both Brandon Clarke and Edey are expected to miss the Grizzlies' regular season opener on October 22nd due to injuries.

Jaren Jackson Jr. recently underwent offseason surgery for a turf toe injury, limiting his availability during training camp.

Although Jackson Jr. expressed his hope to return in time for the regular season opener against the New Orleans Pelicans, there's a strong possibility the Grizzlies won't be able to use the aforementioned four players for that game.

Morant previously stated in an interview that his biggest wish was to play in all 82 regular season games this season, but that dream appears to be unfulfilled.

Morant has had a string of setbacks in recent years. In the past three years, he has missed a total of 126 NBA regular season games due to injuries and off-court legal battles.

Last year, he also missed the Grizzlies' humiliating playoff loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder due to a hip injury.
