The Milwaukee Bucks secured a narrow victory against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday, but star player Giannis Antetokounmpo left the game less than three minutes into the game due to a right calf strain.
According to the latest news, Giannis Antetokounmpo is expected to be out for 2 to 4 weeks. The accident occurred after he assisted AJ Green on a layup and was on his way back on defense when he slipped in the paint and immediately clutched his right leg before being helped off the court.
Bucks head coach Glen Rivers revealed after the game that the team had arranged an MRI for Giannis Antetokounmpo and stated that they believe the risk of an Achilles tendon injury has been ruled out. Rivers further speculated that the injury may have stemmed from him losing his balance after a baseline drive and a collision with a Pistons defender.
It was later confirmed in the first quarter that Giannis Antetokounmpo would not be able to return to the game. This incident is particularly worrying because he had previously missed the first round of the 2024 playoffs due to a left calf strain, and now he has suffered another injury in his fourth game since returning from a left adductor strain.
However, the Bucks lost all four games in which Antetokounmpo was absent. But this time, despite losing their star player, the Bucks still managed to come back from an 18-point deficit and win 113-109.
So far this season, Giannis Antetokounmpo has consistently ranked among the league's top players with an all-around performance averaging 30.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game. His injury will not only affect the Bucks' roster but will also potentially impact the Eastern Conference standings.
