A look back at the Magic's defensive first team: Dwight Howard's reign

September 29th news , as the No. 1 pick in the 2004 draft, Howard not only became the team's historical leader in scoring, rebounding and blocks during his eight seasons with the Magic, but was also selected to the All-Defensive First Team four times with his dominant defensive ability and won the Defensive Player of the Year award three times.

Howard demonstrated his interior prowess in his rookie season, averaging 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game, appearing in all four seasons. In the 2008-09 season, he led the league with 13.8 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game, earning his first Defensive Player of the Year award, ushering in an era of defensive dominance.

In the following two seasons, he not only won the award again, but was also selected to the All-Defensive First Team and ranked high in the MVP voting. The 2010-11 season was his peak, averaging 22.9 points, 14.1 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game, which was almost untouchable.

In the 2011-12 season, Howard remained highly productive, averaging 20.6 points, 14.5 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game, earning him a fourth consecutive All-Defensive First Team nod. This was also his final season with the Magic. During his time with Orlando, he played in 621 games, averaging 18.4 points, 13 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game, leading the team to the Finals.

Although he didn't win a championship with the Magic, Howard ultimately fulfilled his dream with the Lakers. Throughout his career, he earned eight All-Star selections, four All-Defensive First Team selections, one All-Defensive Second Team selection, five rebounding titles, two blocks titles, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2025. His defensive legacy has become a shining mark in Magic franchise history.
