Former Lyon defensive midfielder Matic joins Sassuolo on a free transfer and will wear the No. 18 jersey

Sassuolo officially announced on Tuesday that former Lyon defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic has completed a free transfer. The two parties signed a contract until June 30, 2026, with an option for a one-year extension.

The official also confirmed that Matic will wear the No. 18 jersey of Pizzaro.

The 37-year-old Matic was born in Šabac, Serbia, and made his professional debut for Kolubara in 2006. He subsequently played for Košice, Chelsea, Vitesse, Benfica, Manchester United, Roma, Rennes and Lyon, making 665 appearances, scoring 29 goals and providing 42 assists.

Matic's arrival will bring a wealth of experience to Sassuolo. The Serbian has played in 56 Champions League matches, 47 Europa League matches, 251 Premier League matches, 57 Ligue 1 matches, and 35 Serie A matches. During this time, he won one Slovak Cup, one Portuguese Primeira Liga title, one Portuguese Cup, two Portuguese League Cups, three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and one English League Cup.
