The Athletic's resident renowned English Liverpool team correspondent, James Pearce, exclusively reported on Wednesday that Liverpool has reached an agreement with Al-Hilal for the transfer of Uruguay international forward Darwin Núñez.
According to Pearce, Núñez originally preferred to remain in Europe and declined an offer to play in Saudi Arabia. However, after Napoli's failed bid last month and no other European clubs seemed interested, Núñez finally agreed to the offer.
Pearce also revealed that he had revealed Al-Nassr's interest in signing Núñez as early as January. However, due to Liverpool's fight for the Premier League title and the club's late offer, Liverpool quickly rejected the offer.
Despite this, the Saudi Pro League clubs, owned by the Saudi Private Investment Fund (PIF), has remained committed to signing Núñez. Al-Hilal considers Núñez one of the top candidates to replace Neymar's earlier departure.
The Saudi Pro League giants will pay Liverpool a transfer fee of €53 million to sign Núñez. Liverpool has also approved the player's travel to Germany to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical with Al-Hilal, who are currently undergoing pre-season training there.
