The Athletic reported on Wednesday that Real Madrid's Brazil international forward Rodrygo suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee, and will be ruled out for the rest of the season.
The report states that Rodrygo had actually already suffered a partial ACL tear in his right knee while playing for the Brazilian national team in 2023. However, he continued to play through the injury for the past three and a half years.
At the time, team doctors performed scans on his injury, but due to taking a conservative treatment approach, Rodrygo was advised against immediate surgery, and he continued to play for Real Madrid despite the injury.
However, all of this came to an abrupt end when he suffered a complete tear of his ACL and meniscus in Real Madrid's 1-0 defeat to city rivals Getafe.
The report adds that due to the severity of Rodrygo's injury, he is now confirmed to be ruled out for the rest of the season.
What's even more heartbreaking for fans and Real Madrid is that Rodrygo is expected to be sidelined for an entire year, with the earliest possible return being early February or March 2027.
This means he will not only miss the remainder of the season for Real Madrid, but also this summer's 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Meanwhile, the online media outlet's resident renowned English transfer journalist David Ornstein, confirmed that Real Madrid's transfer plans this summer will be affected by Rodrygo's season-ending injury.
Manchester City considered signing Rodrygo last summer, but Real Madrid, who consider him a key player, refused to lower their asking price.
Ultimately, the transfer fell through because Rodrygo's compatriot Savinho refused to leave.
Now, with Rodrygo expected to be out for a year due to a serious injury, all transfer rumours surrounding his move to the Premier League this summer will be temporarily shelved.
This season, Rodrygo has made 27 appearances for the La Liga giants in all competitions, scoring 3 goals and providing 6 assists.
