The NBA officially announced on Sunday that San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson will be one of the head coaches for the 2026 NBA All-Star Game.
This season, under Johnson's leadership, the young Spurs have displayed astonishing dominance. In their first 49 games, the Spurs have achieved an impressive 33-16 record, currently holding a solid second place in the Western Conference.
Despite the Oklahoma City Thunder currently holding the top spot in the Western Conference, the honor of having coached the 2025 All-Star Game will pass to the head coach of the second-best team in the league, the San Antonio Spurs, due to the league's rule that head coaches cannot be re-elected.
Previously, Johnson had been named the Western Conference Coach of the Month for December based on his outstanding coaching performance. For Johnson, this was a dream leap. Last season, he took over from an ailing Gregg Popovich in a crisis, leading the team to a 32-45 record.
This season, Johnson not only successfully integrated the team's roster but also led the Spurs back to the ranks of Western Conference powerhouses. He will then lead his coaching staff to coach one of the three All-Star teams.
In an interview, Johnson said, "It makes me incredibly honored and proud. It will be a wonderful bonus for me, my family, and friends who will be there, and we will create great memories together. Coaching the All-Star Game will be an unforgettable experience and opportunity."
