Barcelona announced on Friday that it had reached an agreement with Spanish defensive midfielder Oriol Romeu to terminate his contract early. Various signs indicate that Romeu's contract at Barcelona was originally scheduled to expire in June 2026.

The announcement read: "FC Barcelona has reached an agreement with first-team player Oriol Romeu to terminate the contract during the transfer window."

"Barcelona would like to thank Oriol Romeu for his professionalism, dedication and work ethic and wish him every success in the future."

As for Romeu's future after the contract is terminated, neither the club nor the player has disclosed it yet.

The 33-year-old Romeu came from La Masia and made his professional debut for the first team in the Spanish Super Cup on August 14, 2010. He left Barcelona in August 2011 and subsequently played for Chelsea, Valencia, Stuttgart, Southampton, Girona and other teams.

In July 2023, Romeu returned to Barcelona for €3.4 million. Due to injuries, he has only made 37 appearances since his return to Barcelona, providing one assist and winning both the La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup.

Due to limited playing opportunities, Romeu was loaned back to Girona by Barcelona in August last year for one season. So far, he has made 65 appearances for Girona and contributed 2 goals.
