The Utah Jazz released a statement on Tuesday confirming a blockbuster trade with the Memphis Grizzlies. They sent Walter Clayton Jr., Kyle Anderson, Tyler Hendricks, Jogis Nene, and three first-round picks to the Grizzlies in exchange for Jaren Jackson Jr., Vince Williams Jr., John Conchard, and Jock Landale.
NBA insider Jack Fisher further pointed out that the three first-round picks the Jazz gave up in this trade were: a 2027 first-round pick from the Lakers, the highest draft pick from the Cavaliers/Timberwolves/Jazz in 2027, and a 2031 first-round pick from the Suns.
With the trade completed, both teams got what they wanted: the Jazz successfully brought back their desired All-Star center Jaren Jackson Jr., thereby improving the team's overall competitiveness; while the Grizzlies acquired a host of promising rookies and multiple draft picks while starting a new round of rebuilding, setting a record for the largest trade exception in NBA history with $28.8 million.
For the Jazz, Jackson's arrival will help them return to the ranks of strong teams. As the fourth overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NBA draft, Jackson has played 452 games for the Grizzlies, averaging 18.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.9 blocks, and 1.0 steals in 28.8 minutes per game. He is also a two-time All-Star and led the league in blocks for two consecutive years (2022-2023).
So far this season, Jackson has played 45 regular season games, averaging 19.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 1.0 steals in 30.7 minutes per game. However, the Grizzlies currently sit in 11th place in the Western Conference with a record of 19 wins and 29 losses, a less than ideal performance.
