According to multiple reporters including Shams Charania and John Gambadoro, the Phoenix Suns have officially signed 29-year-old free agent Haywood Highsmith to a two-year veteran minimum contract, with the second year partially guaranteed.
As an undrafted free agent in 2018, Highsmith spent early in his career playing for the Philadelphia 76ers and their G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Jackets. He also had a brief stint with Bundesliga powerhouse Cressheim-Melin, during which time he gained some overseas experience.
During his four seasons with the Miami Heat, Highsmith gradually developed into a well-rounded interior player. He played a total of 213 regular season games for the Heat, averaging 5.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 20.3 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 44.9% and a three-point percentage of 37.5%.
Highsmith also boasts a rich playoff resume. He has played a total of 35 playoff games, averaging 3.5 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 0.6 assists in 11.5 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 51.6% and a three-point percentage of 40.4%.
In August 2025, Highsmith, along with a second-round pick, was traded by the Heat to the Brooklyn Nets. Due to a torn meniscus in his right knee, he had not yet played a regular season game for the Nets before being waived this month.
According to the Arizona Republic, citing sources, the Suns have been monitoring Highsmith for two years. They believe Highsmith's competitiveness and resilience are a good fit for the team culture and see him as another addition after Amir Coffey.
While acquiring Highsmith, the Suns decided to waive 25-year-old Cole Anthony. Anthony, who primarily plays point guard, was recently traded from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Suns in a three-team deal.
