Christian Romero recently expressed his hope to play in La Liga in the future.
The 26-year-old Romero is a leading figure among Argentina's Mesozoic central defenders. He has won the 2021 America's Cup, the 2022 European and American Cup, the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 America's Cup as a main player. At the club level, he has played for Belgrano, Genoa, Juventus, Atalanta and other teams. In August 2021, he joined Tottenham Hotspur in the form of first rent and then buy.
So far, Romero has made 121 appearances for Tottenham, scoring 7 goals and providing 2 assists. He has also taken turns with Son Heung-min as captain since October last year and is regarded as an indispensable backbone of Tottenham's defense.
In the YouTube channel "Los Edul" hosted by Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, Romero talked about the future and said frankly: "La Liga is the only league in my career that I have not yet played in, and I am very much looking forward to it." He also said that the transfer "will be decided after the end of the season. In fact, I have not communicated with my agent about the future, but I am open to all possibilities. I always keep my personal growth in mind and hope to continue to meet new challenges. But I don’t want to talk about these now because the season is not over yet."
Regarding the upcoming Europa League semi-final, Romero said: "Successfully reaching the semi-finals is an important breakthrough for the club, especially after not reaching this stage for many years. I want to win the Europa League, but success or failure depends on many factors. "
"I always try to live in the present. There are only about two months left until the end of the season. I will do my best to finish the season in the best way possible."
Romero's statement has once again sparked speculation about his transfer to Atletico Madrid this summer. In recent months, Atletico Madrid has always paid close attention to Romero, while Real Madrid is seen as another potential next club. Romero's contract with Tottenham will expire in June 2026, and the club has set a price of no less than 60 million pounds for him.
