Following England's defeat to Japan, manager Thomas Tuchel emphasized the importance of playing against strong opponents. This was his last opportunity to assess players on home soil before announcing his squad for the 2026 USA-Mexico World Cup, requiring him to make more careful considerations.
After the match, Thomas Tuchel said: "It's really painful. Losing is painful, but losing at home is even more regrettable. I don't think we were punished too much, it was just a counter-attack in the first half that led to the goal. Matches like this are necessary for us, the opponent is very strong. Due to the absence of several players, we tried a new formation and made adjustments, and we need to learn from the experience."
Thomas Tuchel also explained Phil Foden's role when captain Harry Kane was absent, saying, "There was only one false nine on the field, and he took on the regular nine role when we attacked from the other side."
“We need these matches and we must take the results in the right way; it’s not the end of the world. Although the situation is not ideal and we don’t like it, the key is not whether it’s a false nine or a real nine, but the players’ performance, their ability to demonstrate their strength, their ability to win one-on-one duels, and their courage. Against a well-trained team, we tried new formations and player combinations, and there is still room for improvement.”
Several players under Thomas Tuchel are sidelined due to injuries, a situation confirmed late last week. Tuchel stated, "We've felt it to some extent: some key players have left training camp. There's a lack of attacking power in the final 20 meters, and perhaps similar situations occurred in both matches."
“We encouraged the players, but it was really difficult for the team. I think our formation was too narrow in the first half, which was not our intention, but it limited the field. In the second half, we increased the width of our attack, were more active on the flanks, and our full-backs were utilized more, which is exactly what we wanted to do. Although we took more risks and created some chances, we failed to convert them into goals.”
“We are very clear about the team’s tactical goals and style of play, focusing on principles and execution rather than overthinking the meaning. Playing for England inevitably comes with pressure and public opinion, which is unavoidable. We need to observe the players’ adaptability through matches, and this can only be obtained through actual experience.”
“We have tried, and we must learn from the experience. We have two months to address the issues, during which the players will participate in a lot of matches to be fully prepared for the upcoming season.”
