32-year-old English manager Will Still is about to take charge of Southampton and has signed a three-year contract, marking his return to coaching in England.
Steele confirmed last week that he would leave French Ligue 1 club Lens, where he had coached for less than a year, and return to England. According to multiple media reports, Steele will be at St. Mary's Stadium to watch Southampton's last Premier League game of the season, home against Arsenal.
Southampton's performance in the Premier League this season was not ideal. They were relegated seven rounds in advance and will compete in the Championship next season. Southampton's former coach Ivan Juric also resigned because the team was relegated early.
Although Steele's negotiation process with Southampton has been hit by some obstacles, including his desire to have his two brothers, Nicolas and Edward, join the coaching staff, and how to terminate his contract with Lens, which was originally scheduled to last until 2027, in advance.
However, Southampton is close to finalising all the details, with only the final steps needed to complete the appointment. Steele's return to England is also partly due to family reasons. Steele's partner, Sky Sports presenter Emma Saunders, revealed in March that he was recovering from encephalitis, and family factors were one of the main reasons for his return.
As a young coach born in Belgium with a British background, Steele started his coaching career in Lille and Bierschott. In October 2022, he took charge of Reims at the age of 30, becoming the youngest coach in the top five leagues and quickly made a name for himself. In June 2024, Steele joined Lens and led the team to the eighth place in Ligue 1.
Although Lens has not officially announced his departure, Steele himself has posted a farewell message on social media and thanked the club and fans for their support during his tenure.
