Liverpool, nicknamed the "Reds," managed a 1-1 draw against Sunderland in the 14th round of the 2025/26 Premier League season, coming back from a goal down to win 1-1 after Wirtz forced an own goal from an Sunderland player. German midfielder Wirtz stated that as long as the players continue to build momentum and improve their teamwork, he believes the team will move in a favorable direction.

The deadlock wasn't broken until the 67th minute of the second half when Van Dijk made a mistake while passing the ball, Enzo Lefebvre gained possession and made a diagonal pass, which Talbi received and fired a long-range shot from inside the penalty area, giving Sunderland a 1-0 lead.

In the 81st minute, Jones won possession and passed the ball diagonally. Wirtz followed up and fired a shot while dealing with the defense. The ball deflected off Mukele and into the net, helping Liverpool equalize the score at 1-1.

Liverpool ultimately drew 1-1 with Sunderland. After two wins, one draw, and two losses in their last five matches, Liverpool currently sits in 9th place in the standings with 22 points, and needs to continue their efforts to climb higher.

Wirtz, 22, said, "It's certainly disappointing that we didn't win, but when you're down 0-1, getting a point is better than going home empty-handed, but of course we wanted to win. The fans have been supporting us, so I'm disappointed with this result, but also a little proud that the team was able to come back and equalize after a setback. The situation isn't easy for us right now because many things aren't going well, so we have to be patient and keep working hard."

“I don’t think we had many chances in the first half, but we knew we would create some in the second half. We just needed to be patient and keep pressing, even more so than in the first half. That’s what we were trying to do, but their goal was a bit unlucky; we could have handled the physical battles better.”

Wirtz also said, "We have amazing talent, attitude and excellent players in our dressing room. We just need to find more chemistry with each other and create better momentum for the team. I believe everything will soon move in our favor. But we must continue to work hard and unite as a team and with the club, hoping to achieve more in the future."

Regarding his individual performance, Wirtz said, "I'm happy that things are starting to go my way. I've been working hard on the pitch, both with and without the ball, but sometimes you need a bit of luck to score or assist. Ultimately, the most important thing is for the team to win. We didn't do that in this game, but we'll try again in the next game."
