In a key match of the 20th round of the 2025/26 Premier League season, Liverpool rallied from behind to take the lead thanks to goals from Wirtz and Gakpo, but conceded another goal in the final moments, ultimately being held to a 2-2 draw by Fulham. German midfielder Wirtz stated that the "Reds" deserved three points in this match, but also hoped the team could achieve better results in the next game.
In the 17th minute, Raul Jiménez made a through pass from near the center circle, and Harry Wilson followed up, dribbled into the penalty area, and fired a low shot into the net, giving Fulham a 1-0 lead.
In the 57th minute of the second half, Conor Bradley made a diagonal pass from the penalty area to Wirtz, who unleashed a powerful shot that found the back of the net. The linesman immediately called offside, but after VAR intervention, it was confirmed that he was not offside, and Liverpool equalized the score at 1-1.
In stoppage time of the second half, Frimpong chipped a pass into the penalty area, and Gakopo scored from close range, giving Liverpool a 2-1 lead. Just three minutes later, Kevin passed the ball to Harrison Reid, who unleashed a long-range shot from the edge of the penalty area to level the score at 2-2 for Fulham.
Liverpool were ultimately held to a 2-2 draw by Fulham away from home. Failing to secure all three points, Liverpool now sit fourth in the table with 34 points, three points ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea.
Wirtz, 22, said, "I'm not satisfied at all. We need points, we want 3 points. We know there are no easy games in this league, especially considering how we came back from behind. 3 points should have been a must-have."
"I think we're in a bit of a difficult situation again because we've drawn two games in a row, first at home, and then this one. This isn't the result we wanted; we want more. We must continue to improve, and it's still a process. Hopefully, we can do better in the next game."
Reflecting on his goal in the match, Wirtz said, "I thought it was offside, so I didn't even celebrate. Of course I'm happy to score, but I would have preferred to get the three points, and I think we showed much more intensity in the second half."
"We didn't press well enough in the first half, and we couldn't find a solution in attack. But we improved a lot in the second half, and we scored two goals."
