Girona announced on its official website on Thursday that the club has triggered the contract extension clause of its veteran captain, Uruguay international forward Cristhian Stuani.

According to Girona's official statement, Stuani has signed on a new short-term one-year deal with the club which will only run until the summer of 2026.

About Cristhian Stuani

Cristhian Stuani, 38, was born on October 12, 1986 in Tala, Canelones Province, Uruguay. He is 1.86 meters tall and primarily plays as a center forward. He can also play as a left winger or a right winger. He has dual citizenship of Uruguay and Italy.

Stuani has played for the youth academies of Athenas de Tala and Danubio since he was a child, and completed his Danubio first-team debut by coming on as a substitute in a Copa Libertadores match in February 2005.

During his two-year spell at Danubio, Stuani won the Uruguayan Primera División once with the club.

In February 2007, Stuani was loaned-out to Bella Vista, and was later recalled early in the summer of the same year due to his outstanding performances.

In January of the following year, Stuani joined Reggina for €1 million.

After the club was relegated, Stuani was loaned-out to Albacete, Levante and Racing Santander successively.

In August 2012, Stuani, who was originally scheduled to join Deportivo La Coruña, suddenly changed and join Espanyol for €2.5 million.

In July 2015, Stuani joined Middlesbrough for €3 million.

During his two-year spell with Boro, Stuani scored a key goal on the final matchday of the EFL Championship match against Brighton to help the club return to the Premier League after many years.

In July 2017, Stuani joined Girona for €2 million.

Since becoming a member of Girona eight years ago, Stuani has played 289 times for the La Liga club in all competitions so far, scoring 141 goals and providing 12 assists, helping the club to unexpectedly qualify for the Champions League once.
