Chelsea player Cole Palmer said Chelsea deserved a better result after their 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in their first Champions League group stage match. Despite the numerous difficulties at the Allianz Arena, the team showed resilience, particularly in the first half, taking the initiative, but their opponents took the lead thanks to an own goal and a Harry Kane penalty.
In his 100th Chelsea appearance, Cole Palmer fired a brilliant long-range shot into the top left corner to give the Blues the advantage before half-time.
In the second half, Bayern Munich gradually took control, with England striker Harry Kane completing his brace with a brilliant right-footed effort. Although Cole Palmer scored again for Chelsea late in the match, the goal was disallowed by VAR for offside. Afterward, Palmer expressed his belief that the team deserved greater recognition and respect in such a high-pressure environment.
He said: "Frankly speaking, I think we should have achieved more. We started well and created some good scoring opportunities early on. But in this kind of top-level confrontation, once a mistake is made, it is difficult to regain control of the game. We lacked concentration at certain moments and failed to seize key opportunities. But I believe we have shown our ability to compete with the top teams in this tournament, and I feel that the team should have achieved a better result."
Cole Palmer was adamant our team's performance throughout the 90 minutes showed we have the ability to challenge the competition's top opposition, a point also emphasised by head coach Enzo Maresca before kick-off.
He added: "Enzo Maresca told us he believed we had the quality to go head-to-head with any team. "Tonight, regardless of the result, I think we proved that.
"Tonight was a valuable learning experience for us, and it felt good to get back into the game. We'll move on from here. We came into this game with the goal of not just learning, but I thought we showed enough competitiveness tonight and gave it our all."
