The Boston Celtics released a statement on Friday, confirming that they had waived 22-year-old guard JD Davidson. The move was intended to avoid triggering the second-tier luxury tax line while freeing up a roster spot.
According to HoopsHype reporter Michael Scotto, the Celtics had exercised Davidson's $2.27 million team option for the 2025/26 season as early as June, but the contract is non-guaranteed.
Davidson played for the University of Alabama Crimson Tide in the NCAA during college and was selected by the Celtics with the 53rd pick in the second round in 2022. He played as a two-way player for the Celtics for a long time and only received a standard contract in April this year.
So far, Davidson has played 36 regular season games for the Celtics, averaging 1.9 points, 0.9 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game, with a shooting percentage of 38.5% and a three-point shooting percentage of 28.1%.
In contrast, Davidson's performance in the Development League is remarkable. Last season, he played 45 games for the Maine Celtics, averaging 25.6 points, 7.8 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game, and was named the G League MVP.
