According to the latest player transaction log published on the NBA official website, the Dallas Mavericks have completed a contract extension with Dante Exum. The agreement between the two parties was reached two months ago and the contract term is one year.

All signs indicate that the roster spot and salary cap space the Mavericks need to re-sign Exum comes from cutting 23-year-old Olivier Maxence Prosper.

Exum, 30, primarily plays point guard and was selected by the Utah Jazz with the fifth overall pick in the 2014 draft. He spent the first five and a half years of his career with the Jazz, appearing in 215 games and averaging just 5.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 40.1% from the field and 30.5% from three-point range.

Unable to gain a foothold in the NBA, Exum chose to move to the European League in 2021. He played for Barcelona and Belgrade Guerrilla before returning to the NBA in 2023.

Exum has appeared in 75 regular season games for the Mavericks, averaging 8.0 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 51.6% from the field and 47.2% from three-point range. He has also appeared in 21 playoff games for the Mavericks, averaging 2.0 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.6 assists per game while shooting 36.4% from the field and 35.0% from three-point range.

For the Mavericks, Exum's role is to share the playmaking burden with Kyrie Irving out for a long time due to injury, allowing this year's top draft pick, Cooper Flagg, to develop more fully. He is widely regarded as a reliable point guard when healthy, although he played only 20 games last season due to right wrist surgery and a broken left hand.
